On the 11^th of November 2005, Prof. Thomas Szasz was proclaimed Honorary Member of OISM:

In virtue of his longstanding and firm defence of human rights and freedom, and for his call to personal responsibility and libertarian values, through a lifetime devoted to writing and addressing the public in conferences, with special reference to his unique critique of Psychiatry and Mental Health practices, the Italian Observatory on Mental Health proclaims Prof. Thomas Szasz, MD, Honorary Member of OISM.

We are grateful to you for having shown to mankind the myth of «mental illness» and the severe consequences resulting from this idea. In doing so, you have paved the path to the process of liberation from the condition of psychiatric slavery that has subjected worldwide the citizens of the Therapeutic State.
